Brønderslev Municipality has threatened to report discount chain Big Dollar Store to the police unless its shop in Brønderslev reduces the amount of space devoted to groceries, DR reports.
The Danish Planning Appeals Board has twice ruled that groceries may occupy no more than 10 per cent of the shop’s floor area. The municipality estimates that they still account for about 25 per cent.
The store has until 25 November to comply. The municipality will decide on 30 November whether to file a police report, said Peter Stecher, chair of its technical and environmental committee.
“I expect the company to accept the Planning Appeals Board’s decision. If it does not comply by the deadline, a police report could be the next step,” Stecher said.
In the most serious case, the shop could have to move, he said.
Big Dollar Store, which has 14 shops across Denmark, has sued the Planning Appeals Board because it disagrees with the ruling. The chain declined to comment further to DR, saying in an email sent through its customer service address that it had taken the municipality’s “remarkable order” into account and that the case was now in the hands of its lawyers.
In October 2025, the chain’s country manager, Peter Jakobsen, called the board’s first ruling “grotesque”.
