defence agreement, Greenland, United States

Greenland’s parliament has approved a defence agreement with the United States, clearing the way for it to take effect once Denmark’s parliament also gives its approval, DR reports.

The agreement was signed by Greenland, the United States and Denmark in New York on September 22. After a heated debate, 16 members of Greenland’s parliament voted in favour, none voted against and seven abstained.

Denmark’s parliament is due to begin considering the agreement on November 12, with the process expected to conclude on November 19. The agreement will take effect once the United States receives notification that both parliaments have approved it.
