Hannes Þór Halldórsson says the IceGuys project has exceeded his highest expectations and hopes it will become a lasting classic. The director spoke to mbl.is about the series and film, IceGuys: The Movie, which is now in cinemas.

“Perhaps I’m getting ahead of myself, but I hope IceGuys will become our generation’s Með allt á hreinu,” he said, referring to the classic Stuðmenn film. He hopes people will revisit IceGuys regularly in the future. “IceGuys has become an immortal brand,” he said.

Hannes said the five performers had grown in confidence as the project progressed, and that each brought something to it. Their willingness to make fun of themselves and comments made about them also helped disarm critics early on, he said.

But humour alone was not enough, Hannes said. He wanted the material to be well written and performed, so the production brought in comedian Sóli Hólm to help write the script, Ásgeir Orri to compose the music and Stella Rósinkrans as choreographer.

Hannes said he would readily recommend the five as actors. He has already cast Herra Hnetusmjör in a leading role alongside Steindi jr. and Vala Kristín Eiríksdóttir in a film he plans to make next year. Rúrik has become a major star in Germany and acts in Netflix films, Hannes said, adding that the others are also likely to take on more acting roles. IceGuys has put them on the radar as actors, he said.
