Iceland’s infrastructure minister has signed two agreements to improve mobile coverage and strengthen communications infrastructure at five locations, mbl.is reported.

One agreement, with Borgarbyggð municipality, will improve mobile service in the area. The other, with Öryggisfjarskipti, covers four locations in the Westfjords, western Iceland and eastern Iceland.

The infrastructure ministry will contribute a total of 37.1 million Icelandic krónur to the projects. Preparatory work is under way, and completion is planned for spring 2027.

Mobile coverage is limited in places south of Ljósufjöll, near Grjótárvatn and in Hítardalur. The project aims to improve ordinary mobile service and access to emergency calls, particularly if a dangerous situation requires the area to be evacuated. A new transmitter site will be built near Staðarhraun, with Borgarbyggð leading that work.

The agreement with Öryggisfjarskipti covers upgrades at Dynjandisheiði, Látrabjarg, Glymur in Hvalfjörður and Mjóifjörður.
