Cleaning contractor IClean says it has acted after a person who was not its employee worked at a school in Mosfellsbær municipality while carrying an access card marked with both the school’s and the company’s names. The company outlined its response in a statement, mbl.is reported.
During an inspection visit by Efling earlier this month, none of the six people doing cleaning work at the school had a workplace identification card. Employers are legally required to ensure their staff carry such cards, according to the report. IClean said the cards were issued immediately after Efling raised the issue.
The person who worked in place of an IClean employee was that employee’s spouse, the company said. IClean’s rules prohibit this, and the employee received a written warning. The company informed Mosfellsbær of its response, and the municipality said it believed IClean had dealt firmly with the incident.
Efling had also raised concerns about how employers could verify that workers had clean criminal records if it was unclear who was doing the work. IClean said it requested the spouse’s criminal record after the incident and that it was clean. The company said all its staff also have clean records.
IClean took over cleaning at Mosfellsbær’s institutions earlier this year after a tender. Its bid was 0.09% lower than the second-lowest bid and 2.5% below the third-lowest, the company said. IClean said it and Efling do not disagree over specific wage payments or working arrangements. Mosfellsbær has requested documents on IClean employees’ pay and has received them.
