Trond Giske has announced his intention to run for a seat in Norway’s Parliament, confirming to NRK that he agreed to be on the list of candidates for Trondheim’s Labour Party just before the deadline. He is set to be among the top four candidates on this list.

The meeting of the Trondheim Labour Party’s representative body was marked by controversy as party leader Pål Sture Nilsen sought to exclude the media. The decision to close the meeting was narrowly approved, with 86 votes in favor and 85 against, while three members abstained. Nilsen justified this move by expressing concerns that media presence might hinder open discussions among members. He assured that the results would be publicly available once the meeting concluded.

There has been ongoing internal conflict within the Trondheim Labour Party following a tumultuous annual meeting earlier in the year, where issues of division and personal disputes were highlighted. Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre had previously urged the party to address these internal challenges. Political editor Siv Sandvik noted that signs of discord persist, indicating that the party remains divided.

During the current meeting, several members argued against closing it, advocating for transparency and open processes, while others insisted that the party’s credibility does not rely on media coverage. A minority within the party’s leadership has proposed a list of candidates for the upcoming parliamentary elections that does not include Giske, who remains a prominent and seasoned political figure. Delegate Nils Nesjan expressed his intention to put forth a proposal to nominate Giske if he is not included.

The contentious atmosphere underscores the ongoing struggles within the party, as it prepares for significant electoral challenges ahead.
