Grindavík, Iceland, search

Police have ended the search for Lúðvík Pétursson, who fell into a sinkhole in Grindavík in January 2024, after finding no clues to the location of his remains. The decision followed a detailed risk assessment, mbl.is reported.

The Suðurnes police said no further search operations would be undertaken because other measures were considered too risky. The formal police search is now complete.

The search, conducted under the responsibility of the Suðurnes police chief with input from Icelandic and foreign experts, lasted seven and a half hours. Two searchers descended into the fissure, where they carried out a visual inspection and searched with rescue cameras and lights.
