Sweden’s Transport Administration has warned of a risk of black ice across large parts of the country in the coming days, SVT reports.

Black ice, also known as black frost, can be difficult to see and make roads extremely slippery. It forms when the road surface is cold and damp at temperatures around zero degrees Celsius, the agency said in a press release.

The warning covers large parts of central and western Sweden, though other parts of the country could also be affected. “In most of the country, people now need to prepare for icy conditions,” said Daniel Mossberg, a spokesperson for the Transport Administration.

The agency advises drivers to accelerate and brake gently and to switch to winter tyres to reduce the risk of crashes.
