The Swedish Association of Local Authorities and Regions (SKR) has terminated its collective agreement with the teachers’ union Sveriges Lärare, SVT reports. The agreement covers 220,000 teachers.

SKR says a new law on teachers’ working hours means the same issues are now regulated both by legislation and by the agreement. The organisation says the agreement needs to be updated to reflect the new legislation.

“We believe we are best placed to do that by signing an entirely new agreement,” Jeanette Hedberg, SKR’s head of negotiations, told Swedish Radio’s Ekot.

SKR described terminating the agreement as an unusual step. SVT said it had contacted Sveriges Lärare, which was expected to respond.
