The Court of Appeal has concurred with the district court that, apart from the defendant’s confession, there are no mitigating circumstances regarding the actions taken on the day of the murder. Consequently, they agree with the Trøndelag District Court that the appropriate sentence is 16 years in prison.

The 27-year-old man contested the charge of aggravated assault, claiming he wished to protect his two children from witnessing the stabbing of their mother, who ultimately bled to death. However, both courts view it as an aggravating factor that he allowed the children to witness their mother’s murder. The Court of Appeal emphasized that the murder was committed under particularly aggravating circumstances.

The defendant described an escalating tension with his wife, 24, as they began their day on August 26, 2023, which tragically ended in murder. His wife and their two young children had been frequently staying with her family during that period. When he returned home that evening, an argument ensued outside their residence, prompting the wife’s sister to remark on the difficulty of speaking to someone “dumb,” without naming the defendant.

After the incident, the man failed to aid his wife after she was stabbed, which the court noted could have potentially saved her life had he provided immediate assistance. The couple’s children were present in the apartment during the attack.

Following the murder, the defendant drove to the police station and confessed, stating, “I have killed my wife.” Witnesses revealed that the deceased had been planning to leave the marriage, seeking alternative housing with support, as she feared her husband’s reaction.
