Danfoss is urging customers to update their systems after refrigeration equipment made by the southern Jutland company was hacked in French supermarkets, DR reports. The cyberattack forced many stores to discard fresh and frozen goods.

Since Monday morning, Danfoss has been contacting customers worldwide by email, letter and phone to remind them to replace or update outdated systems, the company’s communications director, Kasper Elbjørn, told DR.

The affected supermarkets had not updated their systems, despite reminders from Danfoss, and older systems were connected to the internet. Elbjørn said the company had urged customers to install a security update as recently as August last year, but some had not replaced their systems or updated their software.

Elbjørn said Danish customers were generally good at updating their systems and replacing equipment when it was withdrawn from the market. He said the risk of similar hacking attacks on Danish supermarket refrigeration systems was minimal, though such attacks could never be ruled out entirely.
