About 40 rescue workers are securing roofs and checking boats in Siglufjörður, a town hit by a severe storm, mbl.is reports. The work is intended to prevent further damage.

Roofs have already blown off several buildings, including homes, and debris is scattered around the town, said Jón Þór Víglundsson, an information officer for the Icelandic Association for Search and Rescue. He described the conditions as life-threatening.

Rescue teams from eastern Tröllaskagi and Akureyri were called in to assist. They include Súlur from Akureyri, Tindar from Ólafsfjörður, the Dalvík rescue team and Strákar from Siglufjörður.

In Húsavík, rescuers were called out after a tree broke beside the Grænuvellir preschool. Earlier, rescue workers secured a greenhouse in Hella that was at risk in the storm; two of its windows were broken.
