hit-and-run, Mosfellsbær, traffic safety

An eight-year-old boy was hit by a car in the Helgafell neighbourhood of Mosfellsbær on Monday, and the driver left without helping him, mbl.is reported.

The boy suffered minor head injuries and a nosebleed. His father, Jósef Már Smith, told mbl.is that his son was crossing the street with his bicycle when a car came out of a parking garage. The boy stopped and saw the car slow down, then began crossing, but the vehicle continued and hit him.

The boy described the driver as a young woman who was using her phone. She opened the window and said something to him before driving away, his father said. The boy was left crying, with a nosebleed and a damaged bicycle.

Jósef’s fiancée, Kamilla Önnudóttir, posted about the incident on Facebook and appealed for witnesses. She later said the family had learned more about what happened and that police were investigating.

The parents said they wanted to highlight the dangers of speeding and phone use behind the wheel, particularly on residential streets where children are present. Grétar Stefánsson, a senior police officer in the capital area, confirmed to mbl.is that the case was being investigated as a collision and a hit-and-run.
