The Finnish berry-picking industry is facing a significant scandal involving allegations of widespread exploitation of Thai pickers. Two major berry companies are under investigation, with former CEOs accused of serious human trafficking offenses.

In two separate cases, Jukka Kristo, the former CEO of Polarica Marjanhankinta, and his Thai business associate Kalyakorn “Durian” Phongpit, face charges of 77 counts of aggravated human trafficking. They allegedly lured many Thai pickers to Finland in 2022 and subjected them to forced labor under inhumane conditions. Prosecutors demand a minimum of five years imprisonment for both men.

Reports suggest that the living conditions for the pickers were appalling, with inadequate housing, spoiled food, and unfair contract terms. Many pickers became indebted to the companies after the harvesting season ended, leaving them with limited options to leave the country or seek better opportunities. The trial commenced with a preparatory session in the Lapland District Court, with the main hearings set to start next year.

Another major player, Vernu Vasunta, CEO of Kiantama Oy, faces similar charges of aggravated human trafficking alongside Phongpit, who is named in both cases. They are accused of exploiting the vulnerable status of the Thai workers, allegedly forcing them into hard labor while trapping them in harsh conditions and unfair contracts.

Beyond these trafficking allegations, corruption claims are also under investigation. Olli Sorainen, a senior civil servant at the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment, is accused of accepting bribes from Kristo.

In addition, police are still investigating human trafficking allegations against Janne Naapanki, CEO of Arctic Group, with about a hundred Thai berry pickers involved in the case. Naapanki has denied all accusations.
