The University of Copenhagen will merge its theology and humanities faculties from 1 January 2028 as part of a wider restructuring, DR reported, citing a university statement.

The change will bring an end to the Faculty of Theology as a separate faculty after 549 years. The university was founded in 1479 with four faculties: theology, law, medicine and philosophy.

The university said its faculties had developed very differently in size and complexity over the past 15 years. Rector David Dreyer Lassen said the differences made it harder to maintain balance, leadership capacity and cohesion, and to set priorities across the university.

The Faculty of Law and the Faculty of Social Sciences will also merge, forming a single Faculty of Law and Social Sciences.

The Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences will be split into two: one focused on preclinical subjects and the other on clinical subjects. They will be called the Faculty of Health Sciences and the Faculty of Clinical and Public Health Sciences, respectively.

The Faculty of Science and the Faculty of Life Sciences will also be reorganised into two faculties: one for traditional natural science disciplines and one for bio- and geoscience disciplines.

A faculty is an academic division of a university that oversees related courses and fields of study. The university said the new structure would consist of six faculties.
