A woodworking shed outside the Waldorf school in Lækjarbotnar caught fire on Wednesday morning, mbl.is reported. Fire crews were called at about 7.30 a.m. and found the blaze had grown considerably.
Fire crews decided to let the shed burn because it is in a water protection area and putting out the fire could contaminate the surrounding soil, fire service watch officer Guðjón Ingason said.
There was no risk to nearby buildings, but woodland surrounds the shed. Crews wet the vegetation to prevent the fire from spreading to trees and plants, and planned to remain at the scene until the shed had burned down.
Ingason said there was no danger, but classes at the school were cancelled for the day.
