Dozens of people say they have paid for sleep products through a fake website impersonating Betri svefn, the Icelandic company, mbl.is reports. The company’s chief executive, Erla Björnsdóttir, says some customers spent tens of thousands of krónur on products that never arrived.
The website, betrisvefn.com, has no connection to Betri svefn or its official website, betrisvefn.is. Björnsdóttir said it was designed to look credible, using an Icelandic brand and Icelandic text while suggesting that doctors were behind the business.
Customers have contacted Betri svefn after their orders failed to arrive, believing they had bought from the company. Björnsdóttir said the number of complaints had risen again in recent days and warned that more people could be caught out.
She reported the website to police about three weeks ago and contacted its hosting providers and Shopify, but said she had received no response. Complaints stopped for a time, leading her to think the problem had passed, but the website later reappeared in what she described as a more convincing form.
Betri svefn has urged anyone who has lost money to contact their card provider.
