New Arnarnes Road opens Monday after more than three years of work

Arnarnes Road, roadworks, traffic

Traffic will be able to use the new section of Arnarnes Road between Rjúpnavegur and Breiðholtsbraut from 2 p.m. Monday, mbl.is reports, citing a notice from the Icelandic Road and Coastal Administration.

Construction has lasted more than three years and caused considerable disruption to traffic in the area. Delays may continue while work is completed.

The area remains a construction zone as crews finish a new roundabout at the junction of Arnarnes Road and Rjúpnavegur, along with a nearby walking and cycling path. About half of the roundabout has been paved, and traffic has been moved onto that section. The other half is still being worked on, with the full roundabout expected to open around the end of next month.

Work on changes to the junction of Breiðholtsbraut and Vatnsendahvarf is also well advanced. Once completed, traffic will be able to turn right onto and off Vatnsendavegur at Breiðholtsbraut.

A bridge over Breiðholtsbraut opened this summer, but its design has drawn considerable criticism. The road and related construction work are expected to be completed in November.
