The new Arnarnes road between Rjúpnavegur and Breiðholtsbraut will open to traffic at 2 p.m. on Monday, mbl.is reports, citing a notice from the Icelandic Road and Coastal Administration.

Construction has lasted more than three years and caused significant disruption to traffic in the area. Delays are still expected while work continues.

The road remains a construction zone as crews finish a new roundabout at the junction of Arnarnesvegur and Rjúpnavegur, along with a nearby walking and cycling path. About half the roundabout has been paved, and traffic has been moved onto that section. The full roundabout is expected to open around the end of next month.

Work is also nearing completion at the junction of Breiðholtsbraut and Vatnsendahvarf. Changes will allow right turns between Vatnsendavegur and Breiðholtsbraut. A bridge over Breiðholtsbraut opened this summer, but its design has drawn considerable criticism.

The road and related work are expected to be completed in November.
