Milk truck overturns near Sauðárkrókur, driver taken to hospital

A milk-truck driver was taken by ambulance to the North Iceland Health Institution in Sauðárkrókur after the truck overturned this morning near the town, opposite the farm Skarð, mbl.is reports. Police do not believe the driver was seriously injured; he was being examined at the hospital.

The truck was towing a trailer, and milk spilled from its tanks. The truck and trailer blocked the road. The cause of the crash is unclear, said Höskuldur B. Erlingsson, a chief police officer with Northwest Iceland Police.

Removing an overturned truck of this size requires special equipment and is being coordinated with insurance companies, Erlingsson said, so the road will remain closed for some time. Motorists have been advised to use Route 1 via Vatnsskarð.
