Court of Appeal upholds sentence for intoxicated driver in fatal Ylöjärvi accident
The Turku Court of Appeal has issued a ruling regarding a fatal car accident that occurred in Ylöjärvi, Pirkanmaa, over three years ago. A 17-year-old boy lost his life, and two adult men were injured when a passenger vehicle veered off the road. The car collided with a lamp post at high speed, spinning for several dozen meters before landing on its roof in a forest.
The incident took place on the morning of June 19, 2021, on Kuruntie in Ylöjärvi. One of the injured was driving under considerable intoxication, a man born in 1996, who was sentenced to one year and four months in conditional prison for his actions. He faced charges of aggravated manslaughter, aggravated driving under the influence, aggravated endangerment of traffic safety, and aggravated bodily harm.
The Court of Appeal upheld the sentence previously handed down by the Pirkanmaa District Court in November 2023. The man had requested a reduction in his sentence and compensation, but the appeal was denied. Additionally, the Pirkanmaa District Court imposed a fine on another individual involved in the accident for providing a vehicle to an intoxicated person, a decision that was not contested.
There is an opportunity to seek permission to appeal the Court of Appeal’s ruling to the Supreme Court.
