Photographer recalls sailing Hormuz with 2,000 tonnes of dynamite

Photographer Árni Sæberg spent six months travelling through the Strait of Hormuz with a cargo of 2,000 tonnes of dynamite, mbl.is reports.

Sæberg, who has photographed for Morgunblaðið for more than 40 years, began the journey in 1976 aboard a freighter travelling through the strait between the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman.

The ship also carried 250 tonnes of whale products. Part of the cargo was unloaded in Mombasa, Kenya.

Sæberg recently recounted the voyage with fellow crew members in Morgunblaðið’s Sunday supplement. In the Dagmál programme, he recalled enduring temperatures of up to 55 degrees Celsius in the shade at times.

The Strait of Hormuz has attracted increased attention after becoming a point of dispute between Iran and the United States.
