Former national team player testifies in Dettifoss case

Three witnesses appeared before Reykjavík District Court on Friday in connection with the prosecution’s request to confiscate belongings belonging to Sævar Hilmarsson, one of the defendants in the Dettifoss case, mbl.is reports. One of the witnesses was a well-known former national team and professional football player who had given Sævar a Louis Vuitton bag.

The prosecution is seeking the confiscation of four Louis Vuitton bags, models Truck, Keepall, Kasai and Josh, as well as two counterfeit Louis Vuitton bags, a Rolex watch and several motorcycles.

The witnesses gave evidence by videoconference. The first, one of Sævar’s closest friends, testified about the Rolex watch and said he had been present when it was collected in Amsterdam. He had contacted Sævar’s defence lawyer to explain that he had travelled abroad with Sævar when the watch was bought.

The former football player testified about a Louis Vuitton bag found at Sævar’s home. He said he had given Sævar the bag about three years ago because he was a “very generous man” and had acquired various items over the years while playing football abroad.

“These are all things I buy abroad,” the man said. He believed the bags had been bought before 2020.

He described the bag as a relatively small, hard bag that he believed was intended for women. He had bought several similar bags for his former wife.

The final witness testified about a Kawasaki Ninja motorcycle that had been seized. The man said he did not have a motorcycle licence and described the Kawasaki Ninja as something of a troublesome machine.

“They call this bike the Widowmaker,” he said, adding that, proportionally, no motorcycle had killed more people than that model.

“For an enthusiast like Sævar, this was extremely exciting,” the man said.

He described Sævar as a good friend and “a good man”, adding that people should not judge a book by its cover. The witness ultimately appeared unsure why the motorcycle was being discussed in the case.

“Is there anything else that needs to be discussed about this motorcycle business?” he asked.
