The investigation into the October 2024 fire at Stuðlar treatment home is nearing completion, mbl.is reports. The case will then be sent to the district prosecutor, who will make the final decision on whether charges should be filed.

According to mbl.is sources, the police prosecution division is waiting for one document before closing its work on the case.

Seventeen year old Geir Örn Jacobsen died in the fire, while a Stuðlar employee was seriously injured. The case was transferred from the police investigation department to the prosecution division in early July.

Ten people have suspect status, and that number has remained unchanged during the prosecution division’s handling of the case.

The suspects include current and former employees and managers of the Children and Family Agency, which operates Stuðlar. Employees of the Reykjavík City building official’s office and the Government Construction Contracting Agency also have suspect status. One former resident of Stuðlar is among the suspects.
