Deputy prosecutor challenges reprimand from state prosecutor over social media comments in Iceland

Helgi Magnús Gunnarsson, a deputy state prosecutor, and his lawyer argue that Sigríður Friðjónsdóttir, the state prosecutor, lacked the authority to issue a reprimand regarding his social media remarks made two years ago. In response, Gunnarsson has sent a letter to the Minister of Justice requesting that the reprimand be revoked. Additionally, he seeks to have a case related to his comments in an interview last month dismissed.

During a recent interview on the radio program Sprengisandi, Gunnarsson explained that since he is appointed by the Minister, much like Sigríður, she does not have the power to reprimand him. The matter has sparked discussions about the limits of authority and accountability among state officials, particularly concerning freedom of expression in the digital age.
