African swine fever detected in Miehikkälä for first time

African swine fever has been detected in a wild boar in Miehikkälä, in Finland’s Kymenlaakso region, Yle reports. The Finnish Food Authority confirmed the case on Tuesday, making it the 37th recorded infection in Finland.

Most cases so far have been found in Virolahti, near the Vaalimaa border crossing. The disease was first detected in Finland on July 30, when the first case was confirmed in Virolahti.

On August 28, the disease was also found in a wild boar discovered in Pyhtää.

Kymen Sanomat first reported the Miehikkälä case. Jari Eloranta, communications director at the Finnish Food Authority, told the newspaper that the wild boar was found in the disease’s core area.
