Fire does not derail Toppstöðin redevelopment plans

The fire at Toppstöðin, a building planned for redevelopment, will not delay plans to turn it into a centre for outdoor and extreme sports, mbl.is reported. The project remains on track to open before the end of 2028.

Project representative Brynjólfur Þorkell Brynjólfsson said work with Reykjavík City on the building’s design, planning and construction permits was continuing unchanged.

Project leaders have not yet been allowed inside the building after Monday’s fire and have so far only seen the damage from outside. Police are still investigating the scene, while representatives of the insurance company are expected to inspect the building.

It is not yet known whether the fire damaged Toppstöðin’s distinctive riveted steel frame. The plans have been based on preserving most of the building’s structural framework, but further inspections will determine whether parts of it must be removed and how much of the building will need to be demolished.

Removing asbestos from the building remains a key objective. The work is being carried out in consultation with the Administration of Occupational Safety and Health and Reykjavík City, with the final plans depending partly on the building’s condition and the requirements imposed on the work.

Monday’s fire was at least the third fire attended by the fire service at Toppstöðin and was reportedly the most extensive. Brynjólfsson said the owners had repeatedly tried to block access to the building, but unauthorised people had nevertheless entered and caused damage.

Hilmar Ingimundarson, who has worked on the project for eight years, said the fire would not change the plans. The redevelopment is expected to include a climbing facility, other outdoor and extreme sports activities, retail and restaurants.
