Ásmundur Helgason appointed president of Labour Court

Ásmundur Helgason has been appointed president of Iceland’s Labour Court, mbl.is reports. He previously served as the court’s vice-president.

Björn L. Bergsson has been appointed vice-president after serving as a judge at the Labour Court. Hólmfríður Grímsdóttir has also been appointed a judge.

The appointments follow the appointment of Ásgerður Ragnarsdóttir, the court’s outgoing president, as a judge of the Supreme Court. She took up the Supreme Court position on September 1, 2026, and left the Labour Court presidency at the same time, according to the government’s website.

The Ministry of Social Affairs and Housing requested nominations from the Supreme Court because of the changes to the court’s composition. The Supreme Court nominated three judges for the positions, and the minister has now appointed them in accordance with the nominations.

Under the Act on Trade Unions and Labour Disputes, the minister appoints judges to the Labour Court. The Supreme Court nominates three judges, including the court’s president and vice-president, and they are appointed indefinitely.
