The Minister of Health, Brynjólfur Þór Guðmundsson, is planning to abolish the legal requirement for special evaluation committees that assess the qualifications of individuals seeking middle management positions in healthcare institutions. Current health service legislation mandates that the Minister appoint such committees; however, the responsibility for filling these positions rests with the director of each healthcare institution. The director is permitted to hire any physician or nurse deemed qualified by the evaluation committee.
The government states that eliminating these committees will enhance the autonomy of directors when it comes to hiring middle managers. This move is presented as being in line with practices at other state agencies and aligns with existing laws regarding the rights and responsibilities of public employees. The initiative suggests a shift towards granting directors more discretion in staffing decisions within the healthcare system.
