Liberals clear threshold as opposition leads SVT election poll

The Liberals were comfortably above the parliamentary threshold in SVT’s Valu voter survey, prompting celebrations at the party’s election night gathering. The result comes after months of bleak opinion polls, SVT reported.

“Now we can really breathe out and enjoy all the hard work,” Romina Pourmokhtari of the Liberals said, praising party leader Simona Mohamsson.

Many had written off the party just weeks ago, after several summer polls showed its support at very low levels. Party secretary Fredrik Brange called the result a historic recovery if the figures hold.

“It means the Liberals will remain in Sweden’s parliament for another four years,” Brange said. He added that the party was concerned that the Tidö parties were trailing and that the final vote count would have to be awaited.

SVT’s survey put the opposition parties, the Social Democrats, Green Party, Left Party and Centre Party, at 51.3 percent combined. The Moderates, Christian Democrats, Liberals and Sweden Democrats received 46.8 percent, a difference of 4.5 percentage points.

“I’m very happy for the Liberals and we have more than five,” Liberal MP Martin Melin said. He praised Mohamsson, saying she had done an extraordinary job.
