Betsy explains that the deteriorating situation in Venezuela has left her with no legal recourse; under current regulations, asylum seekers cannot appeal or reapply because Icelandic authorities consider Venezuela to be a safe country. She articulates her fear of being sent back, worried about the repercussions for both herself and her family, suggesting that returning would label her a traitor in the eyes of Maduro’s government.

Officials have indicated that groups of Venezuelans could be deported as early as tonight, but Betsy is adamant that these deportations must be halted. “We are in life-threatening situations,” she insists, asserting that it is not just her life that is at stake, but that of all asylum seekers.

Commenting on the situation, Iceland’s Minister of Justice affirmed that conditions in the countries from which asylum seekers come are constantly evaluated to ensure no one is sent back to scenarios threatening their safety.
