Wind gust sends fish crates flying into Neskaupstaður harbour

More than a dozen fish crates were blown into the sea at Norðfjörður Harbour in Neskaupstaður after a powerful wind gust on Saturday morning, mbl.is reported.

Jóna Árný Þórðardóttir, harbour manager of Fjarðarbyggðahafnir, confirmed the incident. Video shows a forklift operator narrowly escaping the heavy crates. RÚV was the first to report the incident.

“A powerful wind gust came through the crate storage area by the fish market, and the crates were lifted into the air. I understand the gust was around 45 metres per second,” Jóna said. No injuries or damage were reported.

Several crates are still in the sea and will be recovered when weather conditions allow. The Icelandic Meteorological Office had warned of powerful wind gusts in eastern Iceland during the day.
