Halloween, Iceland, Þórshöfn

Children and adults celebrated Halloween in the dark in Þórshöfn, where the holiday has become firmly established, mbl.is reports.

At the local school, students learned about Halloween traditions and origins and made decorations. As the holiday approached, the school grew increasingly eerie. The student council worked to give it a ghostly atmosphere for a Halloween dance, which also welcomed students from Öxarfjörður.

Many adults joined in, welcoming visitors dressed as all kinds of creatures who came trick-or-treating. Much of the town was without lights on Saturday evening as the groups walked between homes, while the northern lights put on a show in the sky.

One house on Langanesvegur goes all out for Halloween. Its residents, the school’s art and crafts teacher and her farmer husband, turned it into a haunted house. Children made their way through the dark, where their ghostly hosts led them through the house and into the garden. Sweets were served in a bloodied bowl, alongside a skeleton hand.
