Danish cyclists Mørkøv and Larsen to receive Olympic bronze medals after thrilling madison race
Michael Mørkøv and Niklas Larsen are set to receive Olympic bronze medals following a thrilling and chaotic madison race on Saturday. As the competition reached its climax, crashes occurred throughout the field, yet the Danish duo managed to stay on their bikes and sprint their way to a medal.
Mørkøv, who won gold in the madison at the 2021 Olympics alongside Lasse Normann Leth, teamed up with Larsen for this event. Mørkøv successfully positioned himself at the forefront among the 15 competing teams. Austrian cyclists Raphael Kokas and Maximilian Schmidbauer also contended strongly, swiftly claiming the lead by winning one of the 12 sprints, which earned them five points. They further strengthened their position by lapping the field, gaining an additional 20 points.
Despite the stiff competition, Mørkøv and Larsen remained competitive, holding third place with 179 laps remaining. They were closely trailing Belgium. Other rivals, including Italy, Australia, and Spain, tried to gain an advantage, but the Danish team remained within striking distance of the podium. With 94 laps left, Mørkøv and Larsen had moved up to second place, accumulating 32 points, just eight points behind Italy.
However, as New Zealand launched an attack, Mørkøv and Larsen managed to break away from the pack. Unfortunately, Larsen began to struggle, falling behind the Spaniards. Then, in the midst of the chaos, crashes involved multiple riders, including leaders from Italy, who were subsequently overtaken by Portugal. Emerging from the turmoil, Mørkøv focused on his mission to secure a medal, showcasing his determination and resilience in the face of adversity.
