Small earthquakes recorded in Svartsengi volcanic region on Reykjanesskagi peninsula in Iceland

Small earthquakes have been recorded in the Svartsengi volcanic region on the Reykjanesskagi peninsula this morning. Currently, there are no additional signs indicating significant geological activity in the area. A natural hazard specialist noted that developments might occur soon.

“There’s a possibility something could happen at any moment,” said the specialist from the Icelandic Meteorological Office regarding a potential magma flow or volcanic eruption on Reykjanesskagi. The situation has remained stable over the past two days, but magma continues to accumulate under Svartsengi. The current magma levels are higher than they were the last time an eruption began in the Sundhnúkagígar cluster in May. Seismic activity around the area has been steadily increasing in recent days.

This morning, a series of small earthquakes was detected at 7 AM in the volcanic system but then decreased. According to Sigríður Magnea Óskarsdóttir, a natural hazard specialist at the Icelandic Meteorological Office, there are no immediate signs of a major upheaval. However, she believes changes in the region could occur soon.

“We are attentive to any developments,” Sigríður stated. “We will just wait and see.”
