Several questioned over break-ins at animal farms

Several people have been questioned in connection with break-ins at animal farms in recent months, but no one is in custody, mbl.is reports.

Last week, intruders broke into Stjörnugrís’ pig farm at Brimnes on Kjalarnes, where a break-in also occurred in May. Fixtures were torn out, pens opened and doors left unlocked, allowing the animals to roam freely through the buildings. Some escaped into fields near the farm.

Five piglets died and one sow suffered a broken leg and had to be euthanised. Numerous other animals were injured.

The Reykjabú farm at Suður-Reykir in Mosfellsbær was burgled in June. In July, a mink farm in Mosfellsdal was broken into and thousands of mink were released.

“Some people have been questioned, but we have not gone into how many there are and will not do so for the time being,” Hjördís Sigurbjartsdóttir, deputy chief of police in the capital region, told mbl.is.

“We are, of course, working on this as best we can. There is little evidence. It is simply under investigation, and that can take time.”

Asked whether the cases could be connected, Hjördís said letters found at the scenes in two of the cases linked them. However, the cases are being investigated separately.

“Speculation about connections is not something we use in criminal investigations,” she said.
