Health center doctor shortages continue in North Savo welfare region of Finland

Currently, one in four health center doctor positions remains unfilled in the North Savo welfare region of Finland. The recruitment challenges are most pronounced in Iisalmi, Varkaus, and Kuopio, where a total of 194 health center doctor positions are available. Recently, the situation has worsened in Kuopio, with reports indicating that some positions have received no applications at all, a marked change from the past.

Ritva Vitri, head of the service unit at North Savo welfare region, noted that there are 61 health center doctor positions at Kuopio’s main health center, of which 10 are currently vacant. This number is significant, especially as temporary staff have also been insufficient. The shortage has led to delays in care, with over 3,000 patients waiting for non-urgent treatment. The longest queues are found in larger cities, particularly Kuopio, Varkaus, and Iisalmi.

In Kuopio, patients may wait 2-3 months for non-urgent appointments. Summer exacerbated the problem as the welfare area struggled to recruit enough substitutes. The situation is reminiscent of last fall when North Karelia faced its own severe doctor shortage, leaving 35% of medical positions unfilled.

To address the crisis, the North Savo welfare region has turned to purchased services and temporary staffing solutions. Vitri emphasized ongoing recruitment efforts, including participation in job fairs and marketing positions while aiming to maintain a strong employer image. However, media reports about long patient queues and staffing shortages may be deterring potential applicants. Additionally, many doctors are drawn to opportunities in private sectors and occupational health services.
