Officials address growing mental health crisis in Denmark as temporary facilities struggle to cope
It is increasingly common for individuals suffering from severe mental health issues to end up sleeping in what is colloquially referred to as a “brummuni” (a form of temporary holding facility). Steen Nørskov, chief police inspector, made this statement during a news briefing yesterday.
Súsanna Olsen, chairperson of the mental health advocacy group Sinnisbata, expressed her concerns: “It is disgraceful that we have no other solution than to confine people with significant mental health problems in detention.”
Currently, there are no psychiatric crisis centers available; however, a helpline connecting to a psychiatric clinic has been operational since spring. Olsen critiques this arrangement, stating that it does not function effectively.
The situation highlights a growing issue in providing proper mental health care and facilities in the region.
