Residents of Lamba receive fake inheritance letters

Several residents of Lamba have received letters offering an inheritance of 8.5 million euros in what appears to be a scam, Kringvarp Føroya reports.

The letters were sent this week by a man claiming to be an American lawyer. He says he has spent six years searching for the heirs of a client who died in 2020.

Sonja Einarsson is one of the recipients. The sender says she could be an heir because she has the same surname as the deceased person.

However, several other households in the village have received similar letters. People have also described receiving the same inheritance offer in a Facebook thread.

In each case, the name of the deceased person has been changed so that the surname matches that of the recipient.

The letters contain several signs of an attempted fraud. Although the sender claims to be a lawyer in the United States, the letters were sent from Spain. Recipients are asked to contact the sender by email and then provide personal information.
