Streetlights reinstalled after wind turbine transports

Mbl.is reports that 12 streetlights removed to make way for wind turbine transports are being reinstalled, with the work expected to be completed this week.

The turbines were transported from Þorlákshöfn to Vaðölduver, a lava and sand plain east of the Þjórsá river and south of Sultartangi dam. Fourteen of the 28 turbines planned for the wind farm have been erected there.

The 14 turbines are expected to begin operating this autumn, while all 28 are scheduled to be fully operational by the end of next year.

Three streetlights are being replaced at the roundabout in Þorlákshöfn. Bjarni Steinarsson was pictured installing one of them. Bergraf is carrying out the work, and streetlights have already been reinstalled at a roundabout in Selfoss.

The transport route from Þorlákshöfn to Vaðölduver is about 130 kilometres long and passes through five municipalities. It is considered one of the largest heavy transport operations carried out in Iceland, requiring road improvements and other modifications at numerous points along the route.

Nearly 14 kilometres of paving had to be laid on the upper section of Landvegur. The road improvement is also expected to benefit local residents and travellers. Work to strengthen and rebuild that section began last summer, covering the upper part of Landvegur towards the junction with Þjórsárdalur Road and Sprengisandsleið.
