Cloudy weather kept Finland’s summer UV exposure below average

Finland’s total ultraviolet radiation exposure was about 10% below average from June to August because of cloudy weather, Yle reported, citing the Finnish Meteorological Institute.

The highest UV index of the summer, 6, was recorded in southern Finland in late June and around mid-July.

In southern Finland, the UV index can still reach the protection threshold of 3 on a sunny day until mid-September.

“In Finland, solar UV radiation decreases as winter approaches, but it is worth remembering to protect yourself from UV radiation during autumn and winter holidays,” researcher Kaisa Lakkala of the Finnish Meteorological Institute said in a statement.

Excessive exposure to UV radiation increases the risk of skin cancer and cataracts, among other health problems.
