Mads Würtz Schmidt wins second gravel European title under pressure

Mads Würtz Schmidt has won his second European gravel cycling title, completing a solo victory more than a minute ahead of the runner-up, according to DR.

The Danish rider, who was defending his title, made the decisive attack with 58 kilometres remaining. He said the result was particularly emotional because of the pressure he had placed on himself after winning almost everything this year.

“I have been under enormous pressure from myself, because I could almost only disappoint. In my mind, it was victory or nothing,” Würtz Schmidt told DR Sporten.

He said the race was one of the hardest days he had ever experienced on a bicycle.

“When it was finally over, I was just incredibly happy,” he said.

Würtz Schmidt also said he had been difficult towards his family during the week because he had been so focused on the race. Giving flowers to his daughter after the victory was therefore an especially emotional moment, he said.

World title is the main target

In 40 days, Würtz Schmidt is scheduled to compete at the World Championships in Australia, where he is expected to start among the favourites for the gold medal and the sport’s rainbow jersey.

The 32-year-old said the World Championships remain the biggest goal of his season. Last year’s event ended badly after he suffered several punctures and was forced to withdraw.

Before the World Championships on October 10, he plans to compete in several races, including the Danish gravel championships. He said the European title had confirmed that he was close to his top level, although he could still improve by a few percentage points in training.

“I am coming to win. The World Championships are the biggest goal of the year,” Würtz Schmidt said.
