Aurora lights appear unusually early in Iceland

The northern lights appeared unusually early this year, with a display photographed in Mosfellsbær on Friday, mbl.is reports.

Ásta Bærings Svavarsdóttir captured the lights at their brightest in the municipality. The mbl.is report said relatively few people may have seen the northern lights so early in the year.

The website Iceland at Night says the aurora season runs from mid-August until the end of April.

In early August, it is usually too bright for the northern lights to be visible, although they are still present, according to an explanation published by Vísindavefurinn.

The appearance of the lights can be seen as a sign that autumn is beginning, with winter not far behind.
