Moose collision wrecks two cars on Lahdenväylä

Two cars were completely wrecked in a moose collision on Lahdenväylä on Thursday evening, Yle reports. Three people were in the vehicles, but none suffered serious injuries.

The crash happened south of Järvenpää when a fully grown bull moose collided with a passenger car on a dark road. A car travelling behind it apparently then crashed into the back of the first vehicle.

The collision slowed traffic on Lahdenväylä for just under an hour.

Niko Karjalahti, a fire supervisor with the Central Uusimaa Rescue Department, said the cars had been travelling at normal summer speeds, but moose are difficult to spot on an unlit road.

There is no way to distinguish a moose when it emerges from the forest, Karjalahti said, adding that such situations always happen unexpectedly.
