A new consumption space aimed at providing health services for drug users was inaugurated today in Reykjavík, focusing on harm reduction. Health Minister Willum Þór Þórsson emphasized the necessity of this facility.
The consumption space, named Ylja, is run by the Red Cross with support from the Ministry of Health and the City of Reykjavík. Located in Borgartún, it features a 100-square-meter container equipped with specialized staff, two consumption areas, restrooms, a kitchenette, and a nursing room. The establishment aims to reduce the harm associated with drug use by providing a safe environment for users.
Willum Þór noted that the project had its roots in a pilot program last year, which highlighted the need for a local consumption space. Funding for the facility is provided by the government through the Icelandic Health Insurance.
In this space, users can get tested for hepatitis, sexually transmitted infections, and HIV. Medical professionals will treat wounds and infections and transfer individuals to Landspítali if necessary, relieving pressure on emergency services. While conventional pain medication will be available, no other drugs will be administered aside from naloxone to counteract life-threatening opioid overdoses.
The consumption space will cater to different user groups; one area is designated for intravenous drug use, while another is equipped with ventilation for those who smoke drugs. Trained health and support personnel will always be present.
This initiative seeks to reach marginalized individuals who may be uninsured, homeless, or lack access to basic services. It will operate for individuals aged 18 and over during weekdays from 10 am to 4 pm, and until 2 pm on Fridays. Users must provide their materials but can access clean needles and low-threshold healthcare services.
