About 50 earthquakes have struck northwest of Reykjanestá since a seismic swarm began shortly after 4 a.m., mbl.is reported. The largest measured 2.6 in magnitude.

Minney Sigurðardóttir, a natural-hazard specialist at the Icelandic Meteorological Office, said the swarm was beginning to subside.

“This is a very small swarm,” she said. “This is normal activity. Swarms occur very regularly in this area.”

She said the earthquakes were caused by ordinary tectonic plate movements. A similar swarm occurred on August 13.
