The Health Directorate is calling on the Ministry of Health and Energy to update the law governing solariums for cosmetic purposes, KVF reports. The current law dates from 2015 and introduced an age limit of 18.

However, the law applies only to public providers and therefore does not provide sufficient protection, the Health Directorate says.

Research has clearly established that using solariums is carcinogenic and particularly dangerous for children and young people.

The Health Directorate recommends extending the law to all providers and introducing clear rules on registration and supervision.

It also wants a ban on marketing and advertising solariums as promoting health. Other requirements should be added to the law, including rules on user instructions, protective equipment, warning signs, exposure limits and operating permits.

Some countries have already banned the use of sunlamps and solariums.
