Finding a replacement for the Smyril ferry on the Suðuroy route is becoming urgent, but the limited market and short timeframe are making the search difficult, Kringvarp Føroya reports.
The Smyril is ageing, while the Galaxy is no longer available. The ferry must enter dry dock every three years, meaning its next scheduled stay is in 2028.
Extensive repairs will be needed then. A new condition report says the Smyril could operate for just over another 10 years, but only if it is properly maintained in the years ahead.
The work includes replacing the main engines. The cooling system, exhaust and car deck also require repairs.
Another vessel must operate the Suðuroy route while the Smyril is in dry dock. According to the director of the national ferry service, the final deadline for finding a solution is approaching as the 2028 docking date draws closer.
