More than 6,000 families across Iceland have received Barnabónus gifts since the initiative was launched in early 2025, mbl.is reports. More than 90% of children born in Iceland last year are estimated to have received the gift, and the organisers aim to reach even more children this year.

Barnabónus is a gift for expectant and new parents from Bónus, a low-price retailer. It contains practical products for the first months after a child’s birth and comes in a reusable bag designed in Iceland.

The contents include nappies, wet wipes, bodysuits and pacifiers, as well as nursing pads, creams, laundry detergent and sanitary pads. The products are intended for both babies and their parents.

“The Barnabónus initiative aims to support families with children and make things easier for new parents,” said Pétur Sigurðsson, the project manager. He said the response had exceeded expectations and that the first months with a new baby could be costly.

Midwife Helga Reynisdóttir said parents repeatedly told her how useful the gift had been. She described it as a carefully designed package containing genuinely useful products rather than samples that might end up unused.
