The cultural and maritime museum Messan in Sørvágur has been surprised by the number of visitors during its first summer, Kringvarp Føroya reports.
Jórun Gudmundsen, the museum’s daily manager, said the building offered “unlimited possibilities” because it functioned both as a cultural centre and a maritime museum.
The original plan was not to operate a café, but Gudmundsen said it quickly became clear that one was needed. The café has attracted many foreign visitors travelling to Mykines and taking boats to Drangarnir and Tindhólmur.
“It is important that we create a financial foundation for the building, and the café has helped us with that this summer,” Gudmundsen said.
This autumn, Messan plans to focus more on its maritime museum activities, which were part of the original plan. The centre also intends to organise informational events, while several larger concerts have been arranged. Musician Marius Ziska is due to perform there soon.
Gudmundsen said she believed the combination of a cultural centre and maritime museum was a good fit for Sørvágur.
